Push Notifications: What Are They?
What Are Push Notifications?
Push notifications are messages that are sent to a user's mobile device from the app. Most commonly, they are used to alert an app user of a game time change or cancellation, but they can vary in use and purpose. When a push notification is sent, the user receives an alert on their mobile device (provided they have notifications turned on) and can click the notification to open the app.
If a notification is sent from the Notifications tab, the main page of the app will open. If a notification is sent from a specific page in the app, such as a game, clicking the notification will open the app to the selected game.
In addition to internal app navigation, push notifications can also be used to direct users to an external link — such as a fundraising campaign, team store, or ticketing page — making them a powerful tool for driving engagement and participation beyond the app itself.
Who Receives Push Notifications?
Anyone who has notifications enabled on their device is eligible to receive a push notification. Here are some examples of the selected audiences a school can choose from:
- Parent
- Faculty & Staff
- Coach
- Current Student
- Fan
- Alumni
- Rewards User (tier 3)
- Season ticket holder
- Users following a certain team
